Principal's Report
Welcome to Term 3 Week 5
Dear Families and Friends, Staff and Students of St Mary's,
This Sunday at 8:30 am Mass, St Mary's Catholic Church, Warracknabeal, students Heidi, Chloe, Campbell and past student Jagger will receive the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. For those Catholic, we believe the Eucharist, or Communion, is both a sacrifice and a meal. We believe in the real presence of Jesus, who died for our sins. As we receive Christ's Body and Blood, we also are nourished spiritually and brought closer to God. Fr. Matt Restall has been working with the children and families from Warracknabeal and surrounding regions in preparing them through the Sacramental program
I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh,
which I will give for the life of the world.
John 6:51
The Sacrament of First Eucharist is a big step in the life of a believer. Also known as “First Holy Communion”, it is the moment when a person receives for the first time, the Eucharist, the body of Christ in the form of a host of bread consecrated by the priest. Along with Baptism and Confirmation, First Eucharist is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation into the faith community of the Catholic Church.
May God bless Heidi, Colby, Campbell and Jagger on their First Holy Communion, and we hope that you are full of happiness, joy, and wonder on this very special spiritual milestone.
Well, we are now halfway through the term and it is an understatement to say that time has flown! Thank you to those who have completed the Insight SRC surveys. These provide the school with valuable information about how our parents, staff and students perceive the experience they have at St Mary's .
Planning for 2024 is well underway. Enrolments for 2024 are coming in - if your child is starting in Foundation next year please submit your forms as soon as possible. Our Foundation information evening is on Tuesday 22 August at 5:30pm. If any families at our school know of prospective enrolments to St Mary's please encourage them to give me a call or to come in and see what we have to offer. As a Catholic school, St. Mary's is open to all, and it is our mission to provide the very best for the families and children of Warracknabeal and the surrounding regions.
Next week is extremely busy - please read the following newsletter articles carefully, especially for information regarding the Chickpea and Wheat excursion next Monday, WWSSA sports on Thursday and the excursion to Horsham on Friday.
Finally, Book Week is fast arriving, with our Book Week Parade on Wednesday 23rd August at 9:15 am. Everyone is getting very excited - we are looking forward to seeing the students in their costumes, with a the big surprise which book and characters will the staff dress up as!

Kindergarten Visit to St Mary's
St Mary's was very pleased to recently host the Warracknabeal Kindergarten students to use our facilities for their Music excursion - it was so lovely to have our visitors!
100 Days of Foundation Celebrations!
All the Chickpeas looked splendid celebrating 100 days of schooling, with the quote of the day from Sid …"I’m too old for this!” Thank you Louise and Bec for your work preparing for this fun celebration, and thank you families for your creative efforts! ( see the Warracknabeal Herald for the write up!)
Barley Assembly - Thursday 10th August
Thank you to Mrs Letts and Barley for your assembly this week.
The children have loved writing their songs about the different aspects of Australia, such as Victoria, Australian animals and farming life.
The children were excited to learn about convict life. They studied what life was like for a child convict in the 1800’s. The Barley students explored: how children as young as five were sent to prison for stealing a loaf of bread, what the conditions of the convict ships were like and what the convict children did when they arrived in New South Wales. Understanding how people lived in the past can help us appreciate the progress that has been made and the importance of social justice.
It was lovely to see the students explore their identity and it was interesting to learn new things about each other. As one student said, “We all grow at different rates and that everyone's journey is a little different but we will support each other in that journey.”
We explored our Australian identity and the influence of other cultures on our way of life. Learning about how different traditions, foods and customs have influenced our identity helps us to understand and foster an appreciation of different cultures and our own.
At home, it would be fun to have different cultural foods or discuss where some of our words or traditions come from. eg the Christmas Tree is a German tradition.
(Clare Letts, Barley Teacher)

Wellbeing - Road Safety Quiz
Approximately 1.3 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes. Between 20 and 50 million people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability as a result of their injury. Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5 - 29 years. The main reason behind these road accidents is not following/knowing traffic & road safety rules.
Trafficquiz.com is FREE to use website developed with an aim to spread awareness regarding traffic rules and road safety rules. Through trafficquiz.com school students can learn and test their knowledge about traffic & road safety rules in an entertaining way i.e. by playing quizzes. Teachers and Parents can also use trafficquiz.com regularly to refresh their knowledge about traffic, road safety & child safety rules. School bus drivers can also regularly use it to learn and be conscious about following traffic rules. Benefit of being ONLINE is that trafficquiz.com can be used anytime, anywhere on any device.
Below are links for students, parents, teachers and the driving staff, so that everyone can learn and be conscious about following road safety and traffic rules. This can save many lives.

Why is it necessary?
- About three quarters (73%) of all road traffic deaths occur among young males under the age of 25 years.
- More than half of all road traffic deaths are among vulnerable road users: pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
- Road traffic injuries cause considerable economic losses to individuals, their families, and to nations as a whole.
